Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic fired Rafael Nadal warning after French Open win

[ad_1]

Nadal came out on top in a thrilling battle against Dominic Thiem yesterday to clinch a 12th French Open title.

Now his attention will turn to trying to capture an 18th Grand Slam honour at Wimbledon next month.

Defending champion Djokovic is the favourite to retain his crown at the All England Club.

Eight-time winner Federer should also never be underestimated on grass.

But Toni Nadal reckons Rafael has a very strong chance of carrying his momentum into the next major tournament.

“When I talked with him today, I told him, ‘I think you have the possibility to win Wimbledon this year again’,” uncle Toni told The National.

“Last year he was very close, I think he had the possibility to win and I want to hope that this year will be possible.

“I know Federer is there, Djokovic is there, Dominic, many good players.

“But I think that Rafael has the possibility, because it’s impossible to work well without confidence. So he has to think that.”

Nadal also expressed his hope of bettering last year’s semi-final showing at Wimbledon.

“I know I played a great event last year. I have been able to be very close to win another title there,” he said.

“As everybody knows, I love to play on grass. And as everybody knows, I am not able to play so many weeks in a row like I did 10 years ago, eight years ago. So I have to do my schedule.

“The last two years that I played in Wimbledon, I felt close again. Even though I lost to Gilles Muller in 2017, I played great tennis there too.

“I was very close to being in the quarter-finals, and last year I was one point away from the final.

“So I will not play before Wimbledon, of course. I felt competitive the last couple of years, so why do I need to change that?

“What gives me a better chance is being healthy more than playing a lot of matches before.”
